Permanent Tooth Replacement
What Are Dental Implants?
The implants themselves are tiny titanium posts which are inserted into the jawbone where teeth are missing. These metal anchors act as tooth root substitutes. They are surgically placed into the jawbone.
The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. Small posts are then attached to the implant which protrude through the gums. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.
Dental Implant placement is a team effort between an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a restorative dentist. While our oral surgeons Drs. Landa, Mizin and Scaramella perform the initial tooth extractions, bone grafting, if necessary, and surgical implant placement, the restorative dentist (your dentist) fits and makes the permanent prosthesis.
Your dentist will also make any temporary prosthesis needed during the implant healing process.
placement of dental implants
For some patients, the placement of dental implants involves two surgical procedures at our Burbank oral surgery office. First, implants are placed within your jawbone.
For the first three to six months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums gradually bonding with the jawbone. You should be able to wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet during this time.
After the implant has bonded to the jawbone, the second phase begins. The oral surgeon will uncover the implants and attach small posts that protrude through the gums and will act as anchors for the artificial teeth.
You will then go to your dentist and they will attach the permanent prosthesis. The entire procedure usually takes six to eight months. Most patients experience minimal disruption in their daily life.

What Types Of Prosthesis Are Available?
The best way to find out if implants are right for you is to come to our office in Burbank for a consultation appointment.
A single prosthesis (crown) is used to replace one missing tooth – each prosthetic tooth attaches to its own implant. A fixed bridge can replace two or more teeth and may require only two or three implants.
A complete dental prosthesis (fixed bridge) replaces all the teeth in your upper or lower jaw. The number of implants varies depending upon which type of complete prosthesis (or hybrid bridges) is recommended. A removable prosthesis (over denture) attaches to a bar or ball in socket attachments, whereas a fixed prosthesis (All-on-4®) is permanent and removable only by the dentist.
The All-on-4® Treatment Concept is a contemporary design on your traditional denture. Using dental implants, Drs. Landa, Mizin and Scaramella can stabilize your denture permanently. The All-on-4® Treatment Concept replaces your missing teeth with a full dental bridge supported with at least four, sometimes six, dental implants. Patients love this system, because with fewer implants needed, there is a reduction in both the overall treatment time and cost, while vastly increasing your overall comfort with your denture device.
Our oral surgeons Drs. Landa, Mizin and Scaramella, perform in-office implant surgery in a hospital-style operating suite, thus optimizing the level of sterility. Inpatient hospital implant surgery is for patients who have special medical or anesthetic needs or for those who need extensive bone grafting from the jaw, hip or tibia.
The best way to find out if implants are right for you is to come to our office in Burbank for a consultation appointment. Using 3D imaging we can thoroughly examine your condition and health history, discuss your intended treatment plan (including anesthesia), go over your payment options, and determine an estimate of your costs.
Technological Advances
Using the most recent advances in dental implant technology, our oral surgeons Drs. Landa, Mizin and Scaramella, are able to place single stage implants. These implants do not require a second procedure to uncover them, but do require a minimum of four months of healing time before artificial teeth are placed. There are even situations where the implants can be placed at the same time as a tooth extraction – further minimizing the number of surgical procedures.
